Descrição: dc.descriptionRivulet fows are ubiquitous both in nature and industrial applications. Because of the typical length scales involved, most analyses of these fows rely on the so-called lubrication approximation. However, the most common lubrication theory for rivulet fows is designed for rivulets with small contact angles, and thus its range of applicability is rather limited. In this paper, we present a theoretical and computational study of rivulet fows of Newtonian liquids down a vertical plane. We analyze three lubrication models for vertical rivulets – two of them found in the related literature and one developed as novel contribution based on a more appropriate perturbation parameter (the aspect ratio of the rivulet)— and establish their accuracy and range of applicability. We compare the predictions of each reduced model with those obtained via the numerical solution of the problem. The three models are correct and predict nearly the same results when the contact angle is small. However, the standard model is accurate only up to contact angles around 30◦. On the other hand, the other two models remain fairly accurate over the whole range of contact angle up to 90◦. In comparison to the standard approach, our new lubrication model outperforms in terms of accuracy and enlarges the range of applicability of lubrication theories for vertical rivulet fows dramatically.-
