Descrição: dc.descriptionThe objective of this study was to evaluate the decomposition of residues from chemical composition of plant tissues and the effects of using cover crops, in rotation with corn, on the availability of phosphorus in the soil and its fractioning as organic and inorganic pools, as well as the emissions of CO2, NO e N2O from the soil to the atmosphere. The study was carried out in an area of Embrapa Cerrados (Planaltina, Distrito Federal), with a soil classified as Red-Yellow Latosol, cultivated continuously for six years. The experimental design was set up as randomized blocks with subdivided plots and three replicates. The cover plants were cropped in main plots of 12 x 30 m at the end of each rainy season over the residue of the previous crop, while the corn was always planted at the beginning of the following rainy season, under tillage and no-tillage system, arranged as two xvi subplots of 12x15m from the subdivision of the main plot. In order to characterize the cover plants, there were measured the decomposition rates (litter bags) of the residues and determined its relation to the chemical composition of the carbon compounds. The analyzed vegetal residues came from Crotalaria juncea L., Canavalia brasiliensis, Cajanus cajan L., Mucuna pruriens L., Helianthus annuus L., Pennisetum glaucum (L.), Raphanus sativus L., and spontaneous vegetation (control). Samples of Crotalaria juncea L., Mucuna pruriens L., Canavalia brasiliensis, Cajanus cajan and Raphanus sativus L. were selected for analyzing both 13C NMR and Cross Polarization-Magic Angle Spinning CPMAS. The decomposition rates from Crotalaria juncea L. and Canavalia brasiliensis were the highest. Mucuna pruriens L., Pennisetum glaucum (L.), and Cajanus cajan L., under no-tillage system, presented the lowest rates. The decomposition rates of Mucuna pruriens L. were similar to that of Cajanus cajan L, despite the observed differences in the C/N ratio of these legumes. Both Cajanus cajan L. and Mucuna pruriens L. presented lower proportion of polysaccharides and higher proportion of the aromatic-C than the other materials, explaining the lower decomposition rates arisen from the lignin tissues of these leguminous. Aromatic and hydrophobic characteristics were higher for both Cajanus cajan L. and Mucuna pruriens L. tissues, expressing the prevailing carbon structure that confer the slowly decomposition rates present in these leguminous materials. The analysis of sequential extraction (Hedley) allowed separating the inorganic (Pi) and organic (Po) fractions of the soil P, thus, expressing it in different levels of bioavailability. The Pi-NaHCO3 and Pi-NaOH concentrations (55% of total-P) were higher under no-tillage system, in the 5-10 cm depth, during the rainy season The Po concentration was higher in the soil samples collected during the dry season, except for to Po-NaOH. The organic fraction was the major part (70%) of the de Plabile pool under Cajanus cajan with no-tillage cultivation (5 to 10 cm depth), during the dry season, while 50% of this P fraction occurred during the rainy season under both spontaneous vegetation (no-tillage system and 0-5 cm depth) and Canavalia brasiliensis (tillage system and 5-10 cm depth). The recalcitrant pool was 55% of total-P in the dry season. The soil under Cajanus cajan presented the less concentration of recalcitrant P. The seasonal variation of NO, N2O, and CO2 fluxes were evaluated in the plots cultivated with Crotalaria juncea L., Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC, and the spontaneous vegetation under tillage and notillage management systems. The measurements of the emission fluxes of those gases were done from soil samples stored in PVC cylinders of 20 cm height and xvii 24.2 cm in diameter, collected during the 2002/2003 cropping cycle. Beside this, other soil samples were collected from the 5 cm depth to determine the concentrations of N-NO3 and N-NH4 and the actual soil-water content. The first rain events after the dry season resulted in NO and CO2 pulses but most of the N2O fluxes were below the detection limit (0.6 ng N2O-N cm-2 h-1). Along the same lines, plots with Mucuna pruriens and spontaneus vegetation, under no-tillage system, also showed pulses N2O. The addition of nitrogen to the crops gave rise to pulses of NO and CO2, under rainfall. Plots with legumes under no-tillage system showed higher annual emissions of CO2 from soil to atmosphere (22 Mg C-CO2 ha-1 year-1). Plots with legumes showed higher annual emissions (0.9 N kg ha-1 ano-1) of nitrogen gases (NO sum N2O) than the spontaneous vegetation under no-tillage system (0.5 N kg ha-1 ano-1). The variable EPPA explained 38% of the fluxes variation of NO, in the plots cultivated under no-tillage with Crotalaria juncea. The majority of the emissions of CO2 was explained by the variable EPPA, however, the concentration of N-NH4 + also explain this emission variation in the soil cultivated under tillage system with Crotalaria juncea and mucuna pruriens, and the spontaneous vegetation under no-tillage. To better evaluate the pulses of NO and N2O emissions after fertilization, measurements were taken immediately and up to five days after urea application in another corn field, under no-tillage and tillage systems. In this case, the experiment was yet conducted at EMBRAPACerrados (Planaltina-DF), now in a Red-Latosol, cultivated with soybean and corn, in rotation, in the rainy season, using an statistical experimental design based on a random blocks with three replications. The cover crops were planted in the dry season, with Mucuna aterrima being cultivated after soybean and millet after corn. After the first fertilization of 60 kg ha-1 N (urea) for corn, pulses of NO and N2O (5.4 ng NO-N cm-2 h-1) were detected immediately, and another one was detected in the third day (4.8 ng NO-N cm-2 h-1) after and irrigation. One day after the first pulse, NO emission decrease significantly (1.9 ng NO-N cm-2 h-1). After five days, the fluxes of NO were reduced to the background levels (1.2 ng NO-N cm-2 h-1). Most of the N2O fluxes values were below the detection limit (0.6 ng N2O-N cm-2 h-1). No significant differences in the fluxes were found between the plots under conventional and no-tillage systems.-
