Resumo: dc.description.abstractThis present work has the purpose to explore the relationship between the sacred and the profane in the narratives Cain and The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, by José Saramago; analyzing its main characters, Jesus, Cain, Mary, Mary Magdalene, Eve and Lilith, relating them to the selected theory. It is noticed that the author, in the two selected works and much of his writing has human profane as the central factor of their narratives, running as a way to question the sacred. Jesus and Cain represent, respectively, the recessed sacred and the profane empowered against God. Mary, Mary Magdalene, Eve and Lilith reflect the feminine questioning the divine and all male-centered cultural tradition. The work is guided mainly by the texts of Auerbach (2001), Bakhtin (1996 and 1998), Barros (1998), Bataille (1987), Eliade (1992), Ferraz (2012), Frye (1973 and 1982) Whitmont (1991), among others. Through the study of the works it is observed Saramago’s profane acquiring a superior role in relation to the so criticized sacred. The appreciation of human and profane features questions not only religion, but also the way that modern society perceives the sacred.pt_BR
