Resumo: dc.description.abstractStudies show different ways to assess psychomotor profile of children that are and not engaged in physical activities. Though there are several studies evaluating children, we found no studies that show the benefits of the practice of "Taiko", Japanese term used to refer specifically to the Japanese drum, in psychomotor development. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect and the influence of Taiko practice towards the psychomotor development and compare with children with low socioeconomic status. Participants were seven children of both sexes, in the range 7-11 years (9.9 ± 1.44) old. For the evaluation of the participants, was used a psychomotor battery that assesses seven psychomotor domains: tone, balancing, laterality, body concept, spacetime structure, global praxis and fine praxis; according to the performance of each child. The scores for the domains range between 1-4; 1 refers to the apraxic profile, 2 to dyspraxic, 3 to eupraxic and 4 to the hyperpraxic. The domains with highest proportion of hyperpraxics characteristics were the balancing (100%) and the notions of the body (57%), with highest proportion of eupraxics characteristics were global praxis (86%), lateralization and space-time structure (both 57%). Comparison showed that the Taiko practitioners have good level of psychomotor development compared to children of low socioeconomic status. However, due to the study’s lineation, cannot be established a relationship of cause and effect. The practice of Taiko seems to favor psychomotor development at appropriate levels.pt_BR
