Resumo: dc.description.abstractBrazil is today a country with a high emphasis when the subject is renewable energy sources. It has a high ability to turn clean energy through alternative sources, and this provides other ways to collaborate with energy generation in the country, which has as most generation potential in the Brazilian matrix, the hydropower. As the exploration of the hydroelectric potential is saturating, and new developments in large hydropower centers go against the current green sustainability policies, it’s important to consider other forms of renewable energy generation, such as solar photovoltaics, as this type of energy is considered sustainable and clean, and Brazil has a great average annual solar irradiation to be harnessed for energy production electric. This work aims to develop a study to compare the sources of solar irradiation data available, and determine the potential of electricity generation from photovoltaic solar source in the city of Curitiba. To the development of this work, it was necessary to review existing literature on solar radiation concepts, photovoltaic effect, types of photovoltaic systems, measuring instruments, basic components of photovoltaic systems that span power generation through photovoltaic modules and over irradiation data available in Paraná. Through these data it was possible to determine the difference between both analyzed databases, determine the potential of electricity generation from photovoltaic source in the city of Curitiba, and how much of that generated energy represents in the total consumption of electricity in the city. It was also determined the area required to attend the total consumption of electricity by photovoltaic source in Curitiba, and an outlook for 2050. As a result of this research it was found that a significant amount of electricity could be generated by this source, showing the importance in the investment of renewable energy source for the development of the city of Curitiba.pt_BR
