Resumo: dc.description.abstractPlastic materials have become widely used for many varied application due to their high durability, mechanical and barrier properties, and low cost. However, their disposition and accumulation in the environment are generating global waste management problems. To minimize this problem, biopolymers like starch has been researched to produce food packaging because in addition to being biodegradable, this polymer is derived from renewable sources. The objectives of this work was produce cassava starch films by casting technique, and evaluate the effect of zeolite addition on mechanical, barrier and microstructural properties. Zeolite promoted improvements in barrier properties as observed by water vapor permeability and isotherm results. Starch films with zeolite presented higher resistant and lower flexibility, but the films with 1% of zeolite were brittle and it was not possible to determine the mechanical properties. Thus the incorporation of zeolite is a feasible way to improve the functional properties of the starch films, but its concentration in the film solution cannot exceed 0.5%.pt_BR
