Resumo: dc.description.abstractMotor development is the field of study which analyses the motor behavior of individuals. Motor patterns are fundamental for sports practice by children and Young people. This study aimed to check if the motor pattern of children who play tennis, soccer and attend physical education classes present statistically significant differences. The methodology employed has a quantitatively descriptive nature and the sample consisted of 136 children of both gender, aged between 8 and 12 years old. 42 of them were tennis players, 46 played soccer and the other 48 were part of the school physical education group. In order to collect data it was used the TGMD-2 (Test of Gross Motor Development) protocol. The collected data was tabulated by Easy TGMD2 v1.0 software, proposed by Souza (2008), determining the locomotor and object control patterns, as well as the general motor pattern. Descriptive statistics were applied over data in order to obtain the average and standard deviation for chronological age, locomotor age, locomotor delay, object control age, object control delay and motor quotient, for each group. The normality of the data was checked by using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the Mann-Whitney test was employed to check on potential differences when confronting each group against the other regarding the locomotor pattern, object control pattern and general motor pattern (p>0,05). The descriptive statistics processing obtained the average and standard deviation from a variable set of data. There was a statistically significant difference (p=0,03) only on the gross motor quotient score between tennis players and physical education schoolchildren. There was no statistically significant difference among the other scores and groups compared. The results show that tennis players have the most developed motor pattern as compared to physical education schoolchildren, but not that much more as compared to soccer players. There is no statistically significant difference between soccer player children and physical education schoolchildren regarding the fundamental motor patterns.pt_BR
