Inventário de emissões de gases de efeito estufa da Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná - câmpus Curitiba – sede Central e Ecoville

Abstract

Due to high concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere, which are responsible for climate change, some initiatives has been developed and implemented to reduce them. The GHG inventory applied in companies and institutions can identify the emission sources, which involve direct and indirect human actions. The inventory shows the current scenario or a period called the baseline, to obtain reliable data to develop mitigation plans and/or reduce emissions. The method used to make an inventory of GHG emissions, at Federal Technological University of Paraná, Campus Curitiba (UTFPR-CT), was based on the Brazilian Program Greenhouse Gas Protocol calculation tool - 2012 (GHG Protocol), that directs the GHG emissions inventory process into three scopes. The scope1, evaluates the direct sources of the enterprise; scope 2, indirect sources are related to power generation, and scope 3 refers to other indirect emissions. For this case study, it we used the base year of 2011. All sources of emissions raised have been identified, selected for each of the three scopes according to the properties the sources and applied to the calculation tool. To obtain the data from each source, the university provided technical information and data from the Solid Waste Management Program (SWMP). A questionnaire was applied among students, professor and administrative-technical staff of the institution in 2011, using the Google Docs – Forms tool. After obtaining the results, it was possible to analyze and compare the sources that contributed most to GHG emissions. Among the three analyzed scopes, scope 3, regarding the public and private transport source of the UTFPR - CT users, indicated to be the largest gases source from the university in 2011. After analyzing the results of the inventory it can be concluded that: scope 1, generates 90,3 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), scope 2 generates 75,4 tCO2e and scope 3 generates 21.403,2 tCO2e. Through the analysis of the results, it was possible to indicate procedures and alternatives for reducing GHG emissions that might be implemented in UTFPR-CT.
