Descrição: dc.descriptionAir pollution is not a recent issue and has become a serious environmental problem affecting human health, urban life quality and, sustainability of urban ecosystems. São José do Rio Preto (SJRP) is a city with around 400.000 inhabitants. This city receives all the pollution from local vehicle fleet (210,269 vehicles) plus that from two very busy state highways. SJRP region also suffers from an increased sugarcane activity over the last years with it burning being responsible by emission of essentials nutrients as N, K+ and ashes. Another point to highlight is that the state of São Paulo is responsible for 60% of the Brazilian sugar and alcohol production, with SJRP accounting for 30% of this total. Total deposition was measured during one hydrological year (5th December, 2006 to 19th December, 2008) in the SJRP town. Sixtynine water samples of total deposition were collected after each rain events and parameters pH, conductivity, Cd, Cr, Pb, K, nitrate and sulphate were quantified. A good correlation was observed as NO3 - And K+ increased during sugarcane burning in the SJRP region (May to December). Cd, Cr and Pb concentrations showed basal level during the whole sampling period. Rainwater was not acid and sulphate ranged according to vehicle traphic. It can be concluded that K+ and NO3- present in total deposition can be used as an indicative of the impact caused by sugarcane activity.-
