Resumo: dc.description.abstractGoal: Gather the most recent work and studies on the early recognition of sepsis. Methodology: Integrative literature review in the United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Sciverse Scopus (Scopus) and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). Following the following inclusion criteria: articles in full version available free of charge, published in the last 5 years, in Portuguese, Spanish and English, with free access on ``Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro`` (UFRJ) network, studies carried out among adults and studies that address the early signs and symptoms of sepsis and the exclusion criteria were: articles that address the treatment, management, outcome and consequences of sepsis, articles focused on specific clinics, basic research articles, case studies, bundles, editorials, letters to the editor, clinical protocols and conference papers. Results and Discussion: A total of 267 articles were found, of which, after analyzing the title and abstract, 34 were selected to compose this review. Conclusion: There is still great difficulty in obtaining an early diagnosis of sepsis. Studies have been carried out in search of new biochemical markers that can indicate and determine the diagnosis of sepsis and its possible complications. Limitations are noted in the present diagnostic methods, and it is recommended that they be used together and not individually.pt_BR
