Resumo: dc.description.abstractAround the world, there were subsidized schools in all the settlements where immigrants from the Italian peninsula lived. It was found that there was an exchange of immigrants between. The ethnic groups had mingled, immigrants from the Italian peninsula were majority, many elementary schools subsidized by the Italian government were created. Since the kingdom of Italy's unification had happened in the last years of the 19th century, the government created and supported private schools in the settlements aiming at schooling the Italian citizens overseas. The subsidized schools taught the official Italian language established after the unification. Few teachers that taught in São Paulo had a teaching degree. There was an excessive amount of students and many teachers without a teaching degree opened their own schools. However, they were not able to educate the Italian citizens for numerous reasons. The newspaper Fanfulla, the Annuario delle Scuole Italiane all’estero Governative e Sussidiate and the Annuario de Ensino do Estado de São Paulo were used as primary sources for the research. The state government did not offer enough vacancies at public schools. In 1909, however, it found ways to create more vacancies; the Brazilian citizen would have to be educated by any meanspt_BR
