Resumo: dc.description.abstractThe paper exposes on the participation of women in the First International Penitentiary Congress (IIPC), an event that took place on July 3-13, 1872, and was part of the debates surrounding the prison reform movement. The Report on the International Penitentiary Congress of London (RIPCL), organized by Enoch Cobb Wines and published in 1873, is the primary source for this study. The research focuses on the women who participated in the event, their works, and their comments. The names of women cited as representatives of reformatories, philanthropic societies, and industrial schools, including Julia Ward Howe, Mary Carpenter, Emily Faithfull, and other notable attendees. The analyzed of RIPCL revealed that the female presence was highlighted in the IIPC. They defended their opinions regarding women who were at prisons, reformatories, and other institutions. The data indicate that women played an essential role in 19th century sciences, and the IPC exemplifies a part of the legacy of their efforts regarding prison issues in various countries and societies.pt_BR
