Resumo: dc.description.abstractJosé Gabriel Lemos Britto was one of the pioneers in the struggle to defend the reform of the Brazilian prison system at the beginning of the 20th century, with emphasis on legal protection for children and adolescents. This analysis aims, above all, to examine his ideas and whether they had any influence on the creation of the 1927 Minors Code. Victims of racial and social prejudices since the end of the 19th century, abandoned children have become themes of eugenic discourses due to the need to create strong and healthy workers for the future of the nation. Contemporaneously with the discourse of the weakening of the “race” that these children represented due to the “degeneration of their stray and alcoholic parents”, this research aims to carry out a survey of some works by Lemos Britto to analyze whether eugenic thinking had an influence on their practices professionals.pt_BR
