CONTENTS OF THIS DISC This disc includes video files and the associated presentation files of completed sessions from the "Shaping the Way We Teach English" Webinar Course. The disc is organized into four primary folders: VIDEOS, PDFs, VLC media player, and GRAPHICS. • The videos, found in the "VIDEOS" folder, are in the Flash Video format, ".flv". • The PowerPoints presentations, found in the "PDFs" folder, are in PDF format. • The "VLC media player" folder contains files needed to install various configurations of the media player. The "VLCPortable" subfolder of the "VLC media player" folder contains a pre-configured, "portable" version of the VLC player that can be run directly from this disc on Windows-compatible computers. • The "GRAPHICS" folder contains various graphic files used in creation of the navigation web page, screen captures, and label art. VLC media player is a free and open source cross-platform media player that supports .flv and most other media files, whether from local DVD and audio CD discs or streaming Internet files. It is distributed by the VideoLAN Organization (http://www.videolan.org/) and is available in versions for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS and other operating systems. Versions of the VLC player for Windows and Mac computers are included on this disc in the "VLC media player" folder. Links to the appropriate installation files for Windows, Mac, and portable versions of the VLC player are included below in the "Suggested Media Player" section of this page. NAVIGATION OF THIS DISC The main page, "index.html", is intended to provide convenient navigation and playback of this disc's files. All ".html" files on this disc conform to the latest agreed standards of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and are compatible with all standard web browsers. KNOWN PROBLEMS Some media players, such as Windows Media Player and Quicktime, do not support the .flv video format and users may need to install a compatible media player. Additionally, some browsers, such as Google Chrome, and some operating systems, such as Apple Mac OS X, will not allow some "local files", such as videos, to play within the browser. Users with systems that fail to play the videos from the main navigation page. "index.html", should first install a media player compatible with the .flv format, such as the VLC media player included on this disc. Even after installing a compatible media player, however, some users will still find it impossible to play the videos within their browser. In that case, users should open their compatible media player in a separate window, outside of the browser, and navigate to the indicated video file using that player's menu. In VLC, that would be: menu>open file>[video file]. Other players will have similar menus. A SUGGESTED MEDIA PLAYER The video files contained on these archival discs are in the "Flash Video" format (.flv). Some computers may require additional media player software to play these files. VideoLan Organization provides the VLC Media Player, a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols. It is a very good, widely used player with very low system requirements. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and other operating systems. There is a "portable version" also, VLCPortable Media Player, available for use on Windows computers only. VLCPortable Media Player can be installed on and run from CDs, DVDs and flash media. VLCPortable.exe is installed on this disc in the VLC media player\VLCPortable\ folder. It can be run from there and used to play the video files on this disc. The video files are located in the folder videos\. Users of this disc may exit their Internet browser and use the Windows file browser to navigate to and open VLCPortable, then use VLC's pull-down menu to navigate to the videos: "menu>open file>[video file]". Note, however, that some operating systems, such as Mac OS X, and some browsers, such as Google Chrome, do not allow "local" video files to run within the browser. In those cases, users should open their media player in a separate window and use the media player's menu to select and play the desired video file. In VLC, that would be: menu>open file>[video file]. Other players will have similar menus. Installation files for Windows and Mac operating systems as well as VLCPortable are included on this disc and linked below. The source code and libraries are provided also, in accordance with VLC's GNU General Public License requirements. These files are the latest available as of August 3, 2013.
